Joe Louis Hun Lakhon Lek Puppet Theater

Central ThailandThai puppet or Hun Lakhon Lek requires three puppeteers working together to bring rhythmic movement to this single puppet, a feat made possible thanks to the creative abilities of the creator of Hun Lakhon Lek. It represents a form of entertainment that has long given amusement to Thais.

Today, hun Lakhon Lek puppetry survives solely as a result of the Joe Louis Troupe, headed by Sakorn Yangkhiawsod, 1996 National Artist. Thankfully, the Joe Louis Theater provides a outlet for sustaining this particular branch of artistry.

Time Traveling at Talard Baan Mai

Central ThailandThroughout Thailand, a market and a community exist side by side. Talard Baan Mai in Muaeng district of Chachoengsao province is one such example. A vibrant market dominated by Thai merchants of Chinese origin since the days of King Chulalongkorn, it continues to retain the same old ambiance of old with wooden houses crowding the bank of Bangpakong River.

Products of old and new including consumer goods and food, Talard Baan Mai evokes a sense of nostalgia, are on offer in a business that is conducted in an amicable way.

It may not be a huge market. But tourists tend to spend more time than expected at Talard Baan Mai taking pleasure in the visit, indulging in food sampling and making purchases of such products as food like a bowl or rice with curry topping, a-la-carte items, noodles, traditional Thai coffee, herbal drinks, localized traditional dessert, ancient toys, other souvenirs and handicraft; some products remind one of the good old day when our grandparents were still in their teens.

Bang Rak District in Bangkok

Central ThailandRecognized as an important trading center since the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), Bang Rak is one of Bangkok's famous commercial areas, where Thais, Chinese, and Westerners are engaged in their businesses. It is also the location of many government offices and embassies, in addition to a residential area.

There is no clear evidence on the origin of the name of the district of Bang Rak. Interestingly, people have always said that Bang Rak comes from the name of a hospital where missionaries provided modern medical treatment. This hospital was said to be very popular in the past.

A fresh market has existed in this area since the reign of King Chulalongkorn. The original owner was Luang Nawakenikon (To), who built a row of stalls for vendors to rent for selling goods. Because of a business slump, he decided to sell the market.
