Bridges with Historical Value in Bangkok

Central ThailandBridges in Bangkok. In history of a country or city bridges are often regarded as off no importance, but history could have been different if these bridges where not around. Therefore we have selected a few bridges which has some history.

Saphan Charoenrat 31

Saphan Charoenrat 31 was built in 1910, in the reign of King Rama VI to commemorate his 31st birthday, this is a concrete bridge with iron bars and mortar sculptures in the shape of a tiger holding a dagger. There is an inscription of the figure '31' with the King's insignia on the bridge.

Saphan Phan Phiphop Lila

Saphan Phan Phiphop Lila or Phan Phiphop Lila bridge was built in 1906 in the reign of King Rama V from His Majesty's own fund, the name means the bridge where the king crosses. It once had beautiful rails but the bridge has been rebuilt and expanded several times, unfortunately leaving no trace of the original structure.

Saphan Ubonrat

Saphan Ubonrat was constructed as a tribute to Princess Ubonratnarinart, one of King Rama V's wives, in 1912 in the reign of King Rama VI, the bridge's original name was Saphan Huetakae or Crocodile's Head bridge. It is a concrete bridge with circles on both sides and a ceramic rail with Thai mortar sculpture.

Saphan Mon

Saphan Mon was built in the reign of King Rama II in teak with concrete steps at both ends, this bridge was reconstructed in concrete during the reign of King Rama VI.

Saphan Hok

These were wooden bridges meant only for walking on. The bridges were rebuilt based on the archive photographs and renamed Saphan Mai Hok Vilanda. There were four of them in the reign of King Rama IV and V, in front of the Ministry of Interior, across the city moat, behind the Ministry of Defense. The ministry was rebuilt to be side of Sai Panya's Palace and across Khlong Bangkok Yai.

Sapha Chang Rong Si

Sapahn Chang Rong Si was designed by Krom Phraya Damrong Rajanuphab, the first Minister of Interior, and constructed in 1910, during the reign of King Rama V, the bridge was built to celebrate the king's 4th cycle (48 years) birthday.

Saphan Charoen Siri

Saphan Charoen Siri is another concrete bridge with four cement columns decorated with western sculptures. Each column bears the number '4' which signifies the fourth year of King Rama VI's reign. His Majesty funded the construction of the bridge to mark his 34th birthday in 1913.
